About ThumbThink

Look at the
conditions.

A publication by Lawrence Cox examining specific industries, the audiences they serve, and the systems connecting them.

What is categorical dialogue?

A continuing conversation with a specific industry or market. Retailers, hospitality operators, education organizations, and other communities of practice face distinct decisions. Each lane speaks to those decisions through observations, questions, and commercial possibilities.

The industry provides the context. Systems thinking connects what we find. Culture, behavior, and trust are lenses within the dialogue, rather than separate industry categories. AI leads the opening edition; ThumbThink remains a broader publication. The initial lanes are a starting point and can grow with the publication.

The perspective

Lawrence Cox is a Baltimore-based systems thinker and concept architect. ThumbThink is where that perspective meets commercial questions: what people value, what organizations overlook, and how an opportunity can become a practical proposition.

How we examine a question

  1. Observe. Describe what is visible and the limits of the observation.
  2. Interpret. Consider the conditions and competing explanations.
  3. Explore. Identify what the interpretation could make possible.
  4. Test. Define what evidence would support or change the proposition.

Editorial commitments

Opinion, hypothetical examples, and forecasts should be identifiable as such. External factual claims should be supported by sources. Forecasts should expose their assumptions and be revisited. Corrections should be dated and visible.

AI-generated imagery is labeled as illustration. A pictured person or location is not evidence for an article’s argument.

Beyond the publication

ThumbThink also develops business concepts and offers market insight, positioning, and market entry advisory. Its existing concept development work remains part of the same environment.
